From Edinburgh to Rome… 25 million Yum Yums | Grocery Trader (1)United Central Bakeries – the Bathgate based makers of the famous Yum Yums – are on course this month to produce their 25th million yum yum this year, a total output which if laid end to end, would stretch from their factory in Bathgate, near Edinburgh, to Rome. Following a fire that destroyed around one third of United Central Bakeries in 2006, the bakery re-invested millions of pounds in brand new purpose built Yum Yums equipment. The new production line, which was completed in mid 2007 has ensured that every single Yum Yum is made to the highest quality and helped to reinforce the market-leading credentials of the business.

Yum Yums – a rope shaped doughnut that are hand twisted then glazed – are a delicious treat. The origin of the name is lost in the mists of time but it is believed that Yum Yums originated in Holland where they were a well-known delicacy, particularly around Christmas and Lent time when the Dutch took some “fried cakes” and shaped them into decorative knots then rolled them in sugar. The ‘fried cakes’ were brought to Scotland where they were greeted enthusiastically and named ‘Yum Yums’ as a result.

Says Paddy Cronin, the man behind the multi million Yum Yums and Sales and Marketing Director for United Central Bakeries: “It’s a real milestone for us to have successfully recovered from the near devastating impact of the fire of 2006 and to have produced 25 million Yum Yums in less than a year is a testament to the fantastic work done by everybody in the bakery. Yum Yums are one of our most successful lines and as such play an important part in our business portfolio.”

Yum Yums are sold in Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Somerfield and BP Forecourts at about 98p for a pack for four and £1.99 for a tub of 12 Mini Yum Yums.
