Baking powder and baking soda are both baking essentials. Depending on the specific recipe, you may need one or the other (or both). They are often used in making cakes, muffins, cupcakes, or any baked goods. In case you run out of it, did you know that you can make baking powder? Just combine 1 tablespoon baking soda and 2 tablespoons cream of tartar, and voila – you already have a homemade baking powder.

I don’t know about you, but I tend to run out of baking powder faster than baking soda. Knowing this simple formula has helped me out in a pinch. Here’s how to put baking soda and one other staple together to make baking powder.

The other ingredient you need is cream of tartar, which is a less-used baking staple. I always seem to have half a bottle of this around (since I don’t use it often!). The cream of tartar adds acidity to the baking soda to create baking powder.

You can make this baking powder ahead of time, and stash it away for when you need it, or do as I do and make it at the last minute when I find I’m out!
