A lot of the spider-people tend to be newer characters, from newer comics or animated series, and "serious" MPQ players tend to be Marvel fans of an earlier era of comics and animation, who haven't stayed current with comics.

We've actually gone through several iterations of "stop giving us so many (whatever)" -- the last one I can remember was "no more MCU characters, give us characters from the comics!" Another popular one was "no more variants of the same character!"

I really find it impossible to care about this sort of thing 10 years in. We've got multiple versions of the most popular MCU/comics/animation characters, and they can never stop releasing characters. They're necessarily going to be scraping the bottom of the barrel at this point, and I really don't see a ton of difference between minor characters from new comics and minor characters from old comics.

If anything, they get more benefit from new comic tie-ins because Marvel wants that stuff promoted, and people who currently read comics will know and appreciate them.

I see this point and acknowledge it.

Personally, I don't think they'd need to scrape the bottom of the barrel for characters... Unless they just can't get permission to use many of the characters not in the game at all, which would be valid.

There are characters I'd like to have in game that aren't, so it does get disappointing when we get more of what we already have...or when they scrape the bottom for minor characters I don't personally care about.

I recognize someone cares about those characters and I'm happy for those people.

I'm still on a self imposed break though just keeping my daily going. At some point they'll bring in something I care about again and I'll hopefully get back into it. But I'm not the target audience at the moment and that's ok.

There are certain spider clones I'd be ok with (Kaine could be cool) but for the most part, a spider just isn't going to get me excited to play again.

But, as you pointed out, tie-ins with current product (especially MCU) is good for the makers of the game. If I'm not interested in the current marvel products, that's a me issue.

Hopefully they create a fun character to play regardless of the skin that gets slapped on it though.

I love Spidey!

I have never liked Venom.

I have zero interest in the Clone Saga era and all of the terrible stuff from then.

I can take or leave Doc Ock.We already have 3 versions which is generous for a villain.

If we were gonna have some Spidey characters I would like maybe The Foreigner, Puma, Molten Man. Or something more fun like Hypno Hustler, Razorback or The Spot.

I suspect most people on this forum probably come from reading comic books in the 90s and the X-Men cartoon, with some like myself trending a bit older than that. I also suspect the games like Street fighter v X-Men also made fans - the Omega Red love probably has some deep roots there. It doesn't help that comic books as an entertainment format have clung on steadfast to the largely outdated and economically unviable single issue format. The Direct Market which saved comic books in the 80s has been a millstone around the industry neck for a long time now.

The MCU/Disney Plus is going to be slim pickings this year so I can understand why the are leaning elsewhere. I expect to get Agatha Harness. Deadpool & Wolverine? No idea - may Cassandra Nova? So plenty of room for all sorts of releases.

Be4st says hello. We know BCS has no problem messing with great characters because they aren't used enough. Hello yes Silk is great and strong in her tier.

We know Silk isn't used because of the lack of a webtile meta.
They are looking at numbers and nothing else. She is common in Puzzle Gauntlet and wipes the enemy teams while losing.

The way I see it there are three categories and all of them have equal weight with the Devs:

1.) Character tie-ins to current events, some mandated
2.) Filling out quotas
3.) Fan/Dev favourites

Apart from maybe last year which was a bit skewed I would say we tend to get a fair mixture.

Strangely, Alpha Flight 1 was a massive success with some estimates saying it sold as much as 500k copies…now, mind you that is John Byrne talking but it is plausible due to how popular the X-Men were in 1983 (obviously not yet at their zenith, but still massive). Alpha Flight was also I believe the first or, at the bare minimum, first really popular Canadian superhero team. So Sasquatch by being part of this team…actually one could argue has a significant spot in Marvel Lore and in sales records.

I am one of the 90s fans mentioned in an earlier comment as I started reading comics in 1987 and was fully into the X-Men by 1990. Oh, loved Children of the Atom,MvC and MvC2. So I am always wanting more X Characters.

Loved the John Byrne Alpha Flight. That was such a great comic.

Back on topic, I think it is a fine balance they have between pleasing Marvel (which does ultimately control who/what goes in), old school fans, new school fans, out of school fans and casual fans.

Personally, I'm fine with whatever and focus more on the power kit. I mean, is Okoye anyone's favourite character? 5AuntMay? Shang-Chi? Mighty Thor? They could be someone's favourite but not a large percentage. But I certainly enjoy playing them as they can destroy the competition.
