Hi dear, when I was creating this no blender split pea soup recipe, I totally ignored that there is an ocean of split peas soup recipes with celery and carrots out there! This vegan version, however, is a bit different from other soups because it has all the textures and flavors that you'll not find in other split pea soups.

Do you usually cook split peas? Even if they are hard and takes a longer time to cook than the green peas, split peas can be used in different recipes like in these split pea pancakes.

This split pea soup recipe, calls for more chewing than the classic soup variation. We find it really interesting and the soup is more filling. Really, you don't need to blend this vegan split pea soup.

It's also beneficial for your teeth as chewing is important in maintaining strong teeth and jaws.

Moreso, what I love about this vegan split pea recipe is that chewing makes us spend much more time at the dining table, you'll enjoy some extra time with your family or friends at the table.

I don't know if you have ever noticed, the fast you finish your dinner plate, the lesser time you spend with your loved ones at the dining table.

This vegan split soup is a whole dish on its own, you don't need anything else. It has proteins, it's loaded with minerals and dietary fiber, to keep you satiated.

Cooking methods to make split pea soup

This vegan split pea recipe is easy and you've got several options on how to cook it. You can use

  • an instant pot
  • a slow cooker
  • a pressure cooker
  • a stovetop

I use a stovetop and still, I reduce the classic cooking time because I normally soak the dry split green peas for at least 6 hours.

If you have some vegetable broth, it will turn this split pea into a very delicious meal. I had made some vegetable broth with pineapple skin (sound funny?), leeks' greens, dried herbs, pepper, and salt…

Herbs and Spices

Herbs and spices are healing, they have been used for ages in different cultures for their healing properties. Add them into your cuisine to perfume your food and to heal your body.

I added a handful of herbs like dry basil, dry chive, fresh mint, and a fresh curry plant.

I also added in this split pea, spices like cumin, mustard seeds, fresh turmeric, fresh ginger, and freshly ground black with white pepper and cayenne pepper, which are anti-inflammatory.

Should I soak split peas?

  • You don't necessarily have to soak split peas.
  • But to quicken your cooking time especially on stovetop, soaking for at least 6 hours will help.

Prolong the cooking

This vegan split pea recipe is not for adults only, my daughter of 6 yrs, appreciate this recipe when I prolong the cooking time. The extra cooking softens further the split peas, making them less crunchy.

I serve my portion first then I continue the cooking for her sake.

This is to say that if you're serving kids, cooking this split soup recipe for extra minutes will obviously make them enjoy this delicious hearty split pea soup.

You can also blend this soup for small kids, especially those who can't chew.
