Back in the 1990s when I first started speaking and writing about the topic of self-leadership, I naively thought I had invented the term, but as I did a literature search I discovered Charles Manz had written about it in 1987. Today, the hashtag #selfleadership is used frequently in posts and quotes, but what does it mean?

Dr. Ana Kazan and I defined the term in our 2012 book on the topic:

The practice of intentionally influencing your thinking, feelings, and actions towards your objectives.

So, self-leadership is about choice and agency. It requires ownership and responsibility and its absence can easily be seen as blaming, complaining, and playing the victim. Self-leadership has its roots in stoic philosophy and logotherapy (Man's Search for Meaning). The practice of self-leadership can be seen in a single mother getting her kids safely to school, or an entrepreneur creating a unicorn startup.

The Benefits of Self-leadership

The benefits of self-leadership are best summed up by successful Silicon Valley CEO, Grant Halloran :

"Self-leadershiphas produced results I had no idea were possible. I have grown enormously as an executive: my relations with my managers and staff are far more harmonious; I have been able to coach my team through significant personal development."

Icelandic #HR Influencer and Self-leadership Practitioner, Herdis Pala Palsdottir , said:

"I read Andrew´s book on Self-Leadership, close to 10 years ago and I can honestly say that it changed my life, and made me a better leader for myself and a better leader for others."
