Season Guided Cooking

Cooking with the season is one of my specialties. I don’t like to force things, if I can help it. If it’s not asparagus season, then I don’t generally go out and purchase them simply to add them to a dish or meal. We enjoy Squash and Potatoes during the fall months and Green Beans and Garlic in the mid of summer!

I like, instead to go with what nature is providing us with during that season. Generally when we have an abundance of eggs is in the spring time when the asparagus is peaking through the ground. It’s our gentle reminder that’s it’s time to make this delightful egg strata dish to be able to incorporate our seasons best veggies.

Questions people are asking about

What is the difference between a strata and a frittata?
Because these dishes are cooked the same (oven baked) and they can both be packed with ingredients, the difference is mostly the texture. Frittatas tend to be thicker and more quiche like (flaky, rich) but without the crust. On the other hand, Stratas take on a lighter, fluffier, bake casserole texture. Stratas have also been compared to savory bread pudding. Another difference is that Frittata recipes tend to use heavy cream instead of whole milk.
What does Strata mean in cooking?
A Strata is a layered casserole dish typical to American style cooking. Eggs are the common denominator in every strata but they can be packed with any ingredients ranging from breakfast, lunch, and dinner pallets. You can expect bold flavors in these dishes!
How long do Egg Stratas last?
Like most recipes with eggs or an egg mixture, Egg Stratas last 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator and are good in the freezer for up to 2 weeks.
Does a strata have to sit overnight?
No – this is a quick dish that can be made the morning of serving it. However, I do recommend letting it sit in the fridge overnight before eating. The flavors mend nicely and the egg has time to soak into the croutons.
